In Love: Jon & Janelle’s Engagement Session

I had fun hanging out with Jon & Janelle for their engagement session on what was a steamy May day. I suppose we were just getting prepped for what will probably be a steamy wedding in late July! It was also a good time getting some smiles out of Jon, who preferred more of the ferocious, badass looks.:)I quite like my own ferocious, badass countenance, so no worries. Despite the ferociousness, he sure makes Janelle laugh, so we were in good shape!

Senior: Madison

I spent another beautiful Kansas City afternoon doing some senior portraits with Madison around town. She’s beautiful and laid back. Perfection. I wish I would have asked more about her playing lacrosse, because that’s something I’m not even the slightest bit familiar with. Do you tackle people in lacrosse? Does it hurt if you get hit by that ball they throw around? Does it ever happen? Do you like the helmets? You wear helmets, right? Anyway, Madison is going to play lacrosse at Colorado College next year, so she obviously knows a thing or two about the game. Best wishes to you, Madison, and thanks for working it out!

In Love: Josh & Katelyn Engagement Session

We headed out to Lawrence for another engagement session with Josh and Katelyn. It’s always challenging to shoot a location that you’ve recently visited in a different way. It forces you to look at things even more differently—to look up, down and in between. Josh and Katelyn were subject to my seeing the world “differently” this night. Admittedly, I occasionally went a little crazy town, but fortunately I love the images that resulted. We started off the night making Katelyn climb a set of rickety, grated stairs in her heels (I think that took 10 minutes). Pretty sure her calves were sore for 3 days afterwards. But, look at the perspective that I was able to get on that first image! L-O-V-E. After that, I had them lie down in front of moving cars, and still later we ran into the middle of a Jayhawk Way (or whatever the heck it’s called) and oncoming traffic. It was a good night with a great couple that resulted in some great images. See?

The Big Day: Mickey & Katie’s Wedding

It was a pleasure to get to know and hang out with Katie and Mickey over the past few months. The day we sat down together for an initial consultation, I knew they were going to have a ridiculously beautiful wedding to photograph. They had already booked two of Kansas City’s finest wedding venues—Redemptorist Catholic Church and Studio Dan Meiners. It’s an honor just to be able to shoot in those spaces, so we tried to make the most of it. Everything about the day came together great and it was a gorgeous. Katie and Mickey’s inspiration for the wedding was to keep it really simple and modern, using no color and only black and white for their palette. I’d say that would give your creatives a difficult challenge, but all of the flowers, cake and details came out beautiful. Katie and Mickey, thank you so much for letting us be a part of your beautiful wedding. I enjoyed your tears and laughter when you saw these images more than you know! May you guys enjoy a lifetime of love an happiness together.

In Love: John & Sherry’s Engagement Session

I worked with a strong contrast in the two locations we visited for John & Sherry’s engagement session. We started in the heart of Kansas City to get some clean architecture backdrops. Then, to finish up, we headed out to the country to play in some long grass that totally blows my mind! John and Sherry are a super laid back couple and they have a lot of fun together. We tried some serious photos, but you could tell after a while that it just didn’t fit.:)It never failed that as soon as I grabbed the serious shot, they would start cracking up with each other, presumably because they felt so out of character. Lucky for me, once they started cracking up, they were then beautifully in character. Check these out (and especially the country shots)!
