All things considered, Nathan and Lacey had a laid back wedding day this past Sunday. They spent the whole day at Ashton Hill Farm, where they had both their wedding ceremony and reception. Having an entire wedding day in one location makes things so much easier! Of course, having a photogenic venue like Ashton Hill is even better.
We were on weather watch again for their day, with spotty storms that kept blowing up around us. I try not to talk too much about the weather for each of our wedding days, but occasionally it’s just a big part of the story. At 3:55 (5 minutes before their ceremony), a decent amount of large sprinkles fell from the sky, causing guests to reach for their umbrellas. The skies held off on releasing the rain at that point though, and they were able to have the ceremony free and clear. During dinner, the heavens opened up and it poured. The storms were spotty still though, and while it was still steadily raining, the sun was shining from the west, which created a rainbow in the east. Thank God for the well-timed rain dump that allowed them to get the ceremony and all photos in without interruption. While it wasn’t raining for most of the day, there was some steamy humidity that was in the process of feeding that dinner downpour that was yet to come. We had to take several breaks during portrait time to keep things as comfortable as possible, especially because Lacey’s dress had . . . a few layers of material. She had so much material that she could spare enough from her dress to make a glittery tie and pocket square that Nathan wore on the wedding day. That was certainly a unique touch and something I’ve never seen before.
Nathan and Lacey’s ceremony was relatively short and sweet, but they chose to write their own vows, which everyone knows is my favorite. Plus they had really cute his and hers vow books they wrote them in. They made everyone cry. (Their vows, not the vow books). Laughter and tears are my favorite things to shoot because they are real and you can feel them in the photos.
We went out for photos at sunset, and it was beautiful. It said 72 degrees at the time, but despite those cool temperatures, our lenses continued to fog up because of that relentless humidity! We had to set the cameras outside for 10 minutes before shooting to make sure they were acclimated to the outside conditions, and still they needed to be wiped a couple times. It was swampy! One thing I’ve learned though, is that swampiness generally makes for the most spectacular sunsets, and this evening didn’t disappoint.
Nathan and Lacey, thank you guys for choosing to have us document your big day! We wish you guys nothing but the best, including that honeymoon you’re currently on.
